A transport does not change the meaning of the messages: the same requests and results travel over every transport. The specification defines two standard transports, stdio for local servers and Streamable HTTP for remote servers.

The first version of the specification, 2024-11-05, defined stdio and HTTP with Server-Sent Events (HTTP+SSE). Streamable HTTP replaced HTTP+SSE in version 2025-03-26. The current version of the specification is 2026-07-28: it removed protocol sessions from Streamable HTTP, and since then any server instance can process any request. The protocol is developed under the Agentic AI Foundation, part of the Linux Foundation. The overall architecture of MCP is described in the article What is MCP.

Overview

Property

Value

Layer

Transport layer of MCP

Message format

JSON-RPC 2.0, UTF-8

Standard transports

stdio, Streamable HTTP

stdio framing

One JSON-RPC message per line

Streamable HTTP endpoint

A single MCP endpoint that accepts POST

Server reply over HTTP

A JSON object or an SSE stream scoped to the request

Protocol sessions

None since 2026-07-28

Deprecated transport

HTTP+SSE from 2024-11-05, deprecated since 2025-03-26

Current specification

2026-07-28

The problem transports solve

MCP servers run in two different ways.
