It does not store code: each entry is a \u003Ccode>server.json\u003C/code> document that names the server, describes it and says where to get it, in a package registry such as npm or PyPI or at the address of a remote server. Publishing a server means sending its \u003Ccode>server.json\u003C/code> to the registry with the \u003Ccode>mcp-publisher\u003C/code> command-line tool after proving ownership of the server's name.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>The registry started in February 2025 as a community project, when the authors of MCP, David Soria Parra and Justin Spahr-Summers, asked the PulseMCP and Goose teams to help build a central registry. It was launched in preview on 8 September 2025. To find it, a user or an application needs a catalog. To install it, the catalog needs the exact package name, transport and settings.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>The announcement of the registry describes its aim as standardizing how servers are distributed and discovered. The registry is meant as a primary source of truth: a single place where the maintainers of a server publish self-reported information about it. Other catalogs, called subregistries, take the data from it and add their own, such as curation, ratings and security checks.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>The registry also ties each name to a verified GitHub account or domain, so a server cannot be published under someone else's name.
